Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s University (SBKWU) is the first Women University of Balochistan established in 2004. Since its inception, thousands of students have graduated from this University. In last few years MPhil scholars of the University are facing problems due to mismanagement of University administration.
In March 2013, SBKWU announced MPhil admissions in various departments. It was the time when many brilliant teachers and professors had left the province due to security concerns. So, it was really an encouraging act to start MPhil program for women in the educationally deprived province.
All the students of first session, with a lot of difficulties, completed their course work but when science students started their thesis research work, they came to know that there are no chemicals, instruments and other equipments available in the laboratories of university.
In August 2013, different departments started their MPhil program course work and according to the HEC documented time schedule the programs should have been completed by September 2015. But regrettably not a single scholar of Chemistry department has concluded her MPhil program, due to lack of chemicals, instruments and other equipments.
Rotary Evaporator is an important device used in chemistry department lab work. This device is used for efficient and gentle removal of solvents from samples through evaporation. At the moment only three Rotary Evaporators are available in the chemistry lab. Out of these three, handle of one evaporator is not working properly from last one year and the department officials have not bothered to send it for repair. Remaining two evaporators are used by 13 students of MPhil and several other students of M.Sc. As a result each and every MPhil scholar has to wait for five to six months for her turn to use Rotary Evaporator.

Moreover, lack of availability of chemicals is another problem in the chemistry lab. Senior MPhil fellows are still waiting for chemicals and junior MPhil fellows have yet not started their work and the seasonal plants which they had collected in the season for their research work had been spoiled due to long wait and therefore many scholars are passing from mental trauma.
According to set time schedule, junior MPhil scholars have to submit their thesis in March 2016 but unfortunately the former dean Dr. Muzaffar Khan, whose contract ended recently, did not make any efforts for timely completion of thesis of students.
Professor Dr. Rukhsana Jabeen, Vice Chancellor of SBKWU, who has completed her PhD in a science subject is also not showing any serious concern and not doing anything to resolve the problem of shortage of scientific equipment for chemistry scholars.

Like Chemistry department there are many other science departments in SBKWU where not a single scholar has submitted her thesis due to lack of chemicals and scientific equipments in labs. If University administration can’t run MPhil program successfully, then why they enroll 40 students every year?
Whenever, students ask about shortage of chemicals and instruments, standard reply of University administration is “There is no grant available with university to purchase the chemicals and instruments.” If the response of University administration is believed to be true then where the scholarship amount is spent which is provided by HEC to SBKWU for MPhil program?
There is no grant available with university to purchase the chemicals and instruments – SBKWU standard response
It’s requested from HEC to take notice of this matter and question the administration of SBKWU for their negligence in this case. HEC should warn SBKWU administration to stop wasting scholar’s time. HEC should also ensure that if SBKWU is not capable of running MPhil degree program then it should be stopped.
