World Widow’s day is observed annually on June 23 to spread awareness regarding the social injustice and extreme poverty confronted by the widows and their children and the plight of the millions of widows worldwide.
The date 23rd June was chosen because on this day, Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba, Lord Loomba’s mother and inspiration for the foundation, became a widow.
According to the founder of International Widows Day “Raj Loomba”, that 259 million widows and 585 million children around the world, along with their family members face humongous hardships and obstacles after their husbands die and they aren’t even looked after by the NGOs and the governments that’s why they are shunned by the society.
Yet millions of widows and their children worldwide suffer from extreme poverty, illiteracy, homelessness, violence, ostracism, not getting proper medical treatments, and discrimination in law and customs.
Widows especially in India have to face many troubles. Those women whose husbands are dead can be found on the streets and even at traffic signals to earn some money for a living, or whereas the only way to escape is suicide to have them burned along their dead husband.
Widows whose husbands are dead are even forced to fight for their rights and are subjected to cruel violence.
Now it is our turn to stand up to put some of our contributions to help the widows around the world to tackle their problems and let’s prove that we are the cells of the “same body of humanity.”
