In twenty first century, we are completely bogged down in accidents. Neither one can not have adequate awareness nor can foretell to have any accident, any time, and at any nook of the globe.
Today accuracy lethality of weapons has increased and surviving from incidents is at the bay. In many gruesome accidents absence of ‘first-aid’, emergency care given before the regular medical aid has been claimed to be conducive to the high-casualties. The very blatant instance is in front of us the recent Quetta carnage where victims succumbed to their injuries due to unavailability of first aid.
Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) is extremely essential for a society suffering from many natural and manmade disasters and trauma. Under these circumstances right handling of victim can save them from further injury and sometimes even death. It becomes out of perception of a layman when he meets an accident. People don’t know how to handle victims. In case of accidents, emergencies or massive destructions the following steps should be followed by the laymen present there.
1) In case of any accident, the survivors and laymen must ensure self safety first of all.
2) Victims must be rushed to the adjacent hospitals as soon as possible before medico-legal-formality law was part of hospitalization accident victims could only be hospitalized in hospitals where medico-legal officer was present but the law was changed by court orders now victims are hospitalized without any formality for first medical aid.
3) Call for help, arrange vehicle.
4) Check breathing and talk to the victims don’t let victim to move neck this can damage the spine.
5) Most patients die with trauma of excessive bleeding. Internal bleeding cannot be handled by layman but for external bleeding wound must be pressed and held. Wounds must not be touched with bare hands instead gloves and tissue papers must be used.
6) For help in emergency Edhi center 115 and Chippa 1020 must be called.
7) Mobile Apps for help: St John’s Ambulance first- aid for both IOS and Android is good tool to have.
Such information must be propagated to schools, families and common people.
