Today Balochistan Voices turns five. This day in 2016, Balochistan Voices was launched to highlight the pressing issues of Balochistan which are ignored by mainstream media.
In the last five years, Balochistan Voices has published almost 2,000 articles on a wide range of subjects including, but not limited to, socio-economics, politics, development, gender equality, climate change, fact-checking, book reviews, and so on.
Success Stories
Balochistan Voices in its five-year journey has accomplished a quite number of accolades. We were among the pioneers of online journalism in Balochistan, which has developed into a successful form of journalism in Balochistan today. Balochistan Voices introduced Data Journalism in Balochistan and to this date, we are the only publication that produces data stories on regular basis.
One of our biggest successes was spreading awareness about a large number of deaths in highway accidents in Balochistan. A data story of Balochistan Voices revealed for the first time that in Balochistan five times more people die in highway accidents as compared to terrorist attacks. Today politicians, government servants, and civil society activists often use the term that Highway accidents are a bigger killer than terrorism in Balochistan and it was Balochistan Voices that identified and revealed this term to the world.
Based on the findings of our data story, the People’s Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI) pitched the idea of Medical Emergency Response Centers (MERC), which was approved by the Balochistan government in February 2019. Today, the number of deaths in highway accidents has reduced by 30 times due to the operations of MERC. We believe that Balochistan Voices has a small share of credit in this achievement.
Moreover, over the course of the last five years, we trained a number of budding journalists who learned the basics of online journalism while working for Balochistan Voices. Even today, Balochistan Voices continues to be a welcoming place for the budding journalists of Balochistan.
Subscription Model Launched
While we continue doing the challenging work that we do, we are in dire need of financial resources to keep up with the growing reporting needs of the province. In order to meet the expenses, we are starting a subscription campaign starting from today. Readers are requested to subscribe to the content of Balochistan Voices and financially support that challenging journalism that we are doing for the last five years.
Thank you to Supporters
In the end, we would like to thank all the readers, contributors, and supporters without whom Balochistan Voices could not have completed its five years journey. We will be relying on your support in the coming future and we will do our best to do justice with our job of covering the ignored issues of Balochistan.
