Islamabad: The Consortium for Asia Pacific (CAPS), a Pakistan-based forum aimed at promoting independent and objective dialogue on the Asia-Pacific region, was officially launched in Islamabad. The event brought together academics, political analysts, regional experts, researchers, and students, who explored Pakistan’s evolving role in the changing dynamics of the Asia-Pacific.
The launch event was graced by Mr. Khalid Rehman, Chairman of the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), as the Chief Guest. Mr. Rehman commended CAPS’s mission, emphasizing its potential to serve as a bridge-builder for Pakistan in the Asia-Pacific region. “CAPS is an excellent initiative, offering an independent and inclusive platform for dialogue. The Asia-Pacific region, with its vast population and strategic importance, plays a key role in global politics. Amidst Pakistan’s political polarization and diverse worldviews, CAPS’s research-based approach will deliver valuable and objective insights,” he said. Mr. Rehman further stressed the importance of Pakistan asserting its identity while engaging constructively with China and the broader region.
Dr. Khurram Iqbal, President of CAPS, outlined the consortium’s vision and strategic goals. He highlighted Pakistan’s critical need to navigate the geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China, noting that its ability to do so could shape its future as a modern and progressive state. Dr. Iqbal stressed that Pakistan should focus on leveraging these tensions as an opportunity for economic growth, emphasizing areas like trade, technology, climate action, and innovation. He also encouraged partnerships with middle powers in the Asia-Pacific to foster collaboration in sectors vital to global progress.
Dr. Shoaib, Senior Vice President of CAPS, echoed the importance of building regional partnerships, emphasizing that alliances within the region would play a key role in Pakistan’s path to development.
Mr. Umair Pervez Khan, Secretary of CAPS and moderator for the event, highlighted the need for thoughtful diplomacy as Pakistan explores opportunities in the Asia-Pacific. He pointed out that the region holds immense potential for Pakistan, both economically and diplomatically.
